General information

The Handwork cooperative is the working engine of the young people of the Open Classroom of the Antoni Cumella Secundary School of Granollers.
It is the first cooperative of students created by an “Open Classroom” from a public school.
The students are 3rd and 4th of ESO and work half the school hours reinforcing the basic responsibilities and the rest, making products, services and activities that they themselves manage and manufacture.
In the cooperative operates a complementary social currency, “the Kumes”, to be able to reward their dedication.
Grades to the project the students improve their basic social skills, daily assistance in the center, punctuality, their self-esteem, commitment to society, ... and discover their abilities at the same time.
After three years of implementing, refining and incorporating new methods, we believe that the project already has enough form to share it with the entire educational community.
That's why we launch into this crowdfunding adventure. We want to explain the project and to do it as we need: a collaborative web platform, an external vision of the project and in a second phase, record in video documentary format the successful experience of these young people during their passage through the classroom.

Main features and goals of the crowdfunding campaign

The cooperative has the necessary documents to be legalized under the umbrella of the Cooperative Federation of students of Catalunya, being in fact the first cooperative of students discharged in a public secundary school centre ownership in secondary and also In Open Classroom.
Handwork is able to carry out the different projects that the students themselves decide. Production projects: cookies and food products, school garden, games and artilúgios for nurseries, among the most outstanding. Projects of services to the Institute: small maintenance, montage of furniture, reforms in its own classroom and small facilities. Projects of activities: "annual calçotada", festivity of Sant Jordi, etc. With these projects fináncian the necessary materials and gain a trip for end of course.
Another peculiarity of the project is the use of a complementary currency, the Kumes: all work done by the cooperative and assimilable to pay jobs are paid by this currency. To do this we use the Cyclos virtual platform receiving at all times the advice of its creators. A Kume is equivalent to one minute of work and to 6 Euros in case the work done is compensable to euros. The Kumes give right to not pay certain quotas of the center, to gain the right to the exits and above all, we arrive to translate them to the final notes.
HANDWORK MODEL
This is roughly the Handwork project, a model that works on the self-esteem and empowerment of boys and girls, cooperative values and the social and solidarity economy and that helps us to care for each other.
With this Goteo we want to systematize it and we want to spread it to all the centers that interest and want to import it for their AO's.
Our dream is a network of centers with a similar project with which we can interact, make meetings, joint projects, etc.

Why this is important

The project is aimed at the boys and girls of ESO with other skills, which are part of Aules Obertes and their companions. We also want the project to be exported to be more in this adventure.

It is directed to our educational community but also to other localities in our country. Above all, it is aimed at those who are interested in educational projects that work on cooperative values, the empowerment of students, the social and solidarity economy, etc.

Goals of the crowdfunding campaign

The general objective of the campaign is to spread the project and facilitate the replicability to other Aules Obertes similar to ours. To do this we will need:

1.- Systematize the project with the help of a pedagogy professional external to the center. We want an external look that helps us to make the model understandable to other centers.
2.- Create a collaborative web platform that will help us to disseminate it and that will serve as a platform for sharing with other experiences such as ours.
3.- To document in video, the evolution of one year of our students in the Handwork project, as well as all the more dynamic aspects of the cooperative, to use it as a support for the dissemination and the training sessions.
The final objective of the project is that similar models appear to ours with which we can share experiences and collaborate.

By achieving these goals, we will make it easier for young people to pass through secundary courses.

Team and experience

The team that will participate on the project until its consolidation is:

Angel Gallart. Three years in the Open Classroom; Two as coordinator tutor of the Handwork project.

Oriol Guinart. Three years in the Open Classroom as accompaniment of the scientific-technological field. He will be in charge of social networks and work in the garden.

Laura Batiste and Núria Molins, counselors of the center, they take care about the most emotional, social and linguistic part of the project.

Teresa Herrador. Illustrator, that gives the creative and plastic point of the project.

Other teachers have gone through the project, including the same director, giving weight and importance to cooperativism, to the point of being a backbone in the Center's Educational Project.
